Pulanesaura was a long-necked dinosaur that lived in South Africa about 200 million years ago. It was a medium-sized plant-eater that could reach leaves without moving its whole body, just like later giant sauropods.12

Fun facts

1

Pulanesaura lived alongside other plant-eating dinosaurs like Aardonyx and Arcusaurus, but they ate different plants so they didn't compete for food.1

2

Its name means 'rain-maker lizard' because the scientists who dug it up worked in very rainy weather.1

3

Pulanesaura had teeth with grooves on both sides and wrinkly enamel that you could see with your naked eye.2

4

This dinosaur was a basal sauropod, meaning it was an early relative of the huge long-necked sauropods like Brachiosaurus.12

5

Its neck was flexible and helped it feed without wasting energy, a trick that later sauropods used to become enormous.1

6

The fossils were found in a quarry on a farm called Spion Kop in South Africa.2

Most asked questions about Pulanesaura

?How big was Pulanesaura?

About 8 to 10 metres long. It was a medium-sized dinosaur, much smaller than later giant sauropods like Brachiosaurus.12

?What did Pulanesaura eat?

Plants. It was a low browser that ate leaves and ferns near the ground, using its flexible neck to reach food without moving much.1

?When did Pulanesaura live?

About 200 million years ago, during the Early Jurassic period (late Hettangian to Sinemurian).12

?Where was Pulanesaura found?

In South Africa, on a farm called Spion Kop in the Free State. The fossils were dug up from a small quarry there.12
