Dalingheornis is the first Mesozoic bird known to have heterodactyl feet, which means its toes were arranged for climbing, like a modern woodpecker.1 2

Its tail was unusually long for a bird, with 20 vertebrae, and it had chevron bones like those of dromaeosaurid dinosaurs.1 2

The only known fossil is a juvenile, so scientists think the long tail might have been a baby feature that changed as it grew up.1

Dalingheornis was named after Yang Liwei, the first Chinese astronaut in space.1

It lived in the early Cretaceous period, about 122 million years ago, in what is now Liaoning Province, China.1
