דברים מגניבים

עובדות כיפיות

Dryptosaurus had long arms with big claws, unlike later tyrannosaurs like T. rex which had tiny arms.1

Its teeth were ziphodont, meaning they were sharp, blade-like, and flattened from side to side, different from the thick teeth of larger tyrannosaurs.1

Dryptosaurus lived on the East Coast of the United States, which was part of an island continent called Appalachia during the Late Cretaceous.1

The first Dryptosaurus skeleton was found by fertilizer miners in New Jersey, and it was one of the first nearly complete theropod skeletons discovered in North America.1

Dryptosaurus fossils were found in a marine formation, meaning the dinosaur's body floated out to sea and sank to the ocean floor before becoming fossilized.1

Scientists think Dryptosaurus was an intermediate tyrannosaur, more lightly built than later giants like T. rex but more advanced than early small tyrannosaurs.1

שאלת

השאלות הנפוצות ביותר על Dryptosaurus

?How big was Dryptosaurus?

Dryptosaurus was about 7.5 metres (25 ft) long and weighed between 756 and 1,500 kilograms (1,667 to 3,307 lb). These are estimates based on a single partial skeleton.1

?Was Dryptosaurus bigger than T. rex?

No, Dryptosaurus was much smaller than T. rex. T. rex could be over 12 metres long, while Dryptosaurus was only about 7.5 metres long.1

?What did Dryptosaurus eat?

Dryptosaurus was a carnivore, meaning it ate meat. It likely hunted other animals and may have used its arms and jaws as weapons to catch prey.1 4

?Did Dryptosaurus have feathers?

No one knows for sure. The fossils don't show feathers, and scientists haven't found any evidence of them on Dryptosaurus.1

?When did Dryptosaurus live?

Dryptosaurus lived during the Late Cretaceous period, about 67 to 66 million years ago. That's just before the dinosaurs went extinct.1 2

?Where was Dryptosaurus found?

Dryptosaurus fossils were found in New Jersey, USA. They were discovered by fertilizer miners in a quarry near Barnsboro.1 4

?Why did Dryptosaurus have big claws?

Scientists think Dryptosaurus used its big claws and strong arms as weapons to catch and hold onto prey. Its claws were about 20 centimetres (8 inches) long.1

?Is Dryptosaurus a dinosaur?

Yes, Dryptosaurus is a dinosaur. It was a theropod, a group of meat-eating dinosaurs that walked on two legs.1

מנפץ מיתוסים

מיתוס: Some people think Dryptosaurus was a type of bird because its name sounds similar to 'dromaeosaur'.

האמת: Dryptosaurus was a theropod dinosaur, closely related to Tyrannosaurus rex, not a bird. It belonged to the group Tyrannosauroidea.1
