Therizinosaurus was a giant, slow-moving dinosaur with a long neck and a beak. It had the longest claws of any animal that ever lived on land, reaching over 50 centimetres (20 inches) long! It used these claws to pull down branches and eat leaves.1

דברים מגניבים

עובדות כיפיות

Therizinosaurus lived about 72 to 66 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous Period.2

The name Therizinosaurus means "scythe lizard" because of its long, curved claws that look like farming scythes.1

When first discovered in 1948, scientists thought Therizinosaurus was a giant turtle-like reptile, not a dinosaur!1

Therizinosaurus was one of the largest feathered dinosaurs ever found. It may have had feathers covering its body.1

Its claws were stiff and only curved at the tips, perfect for raking leaves and branches.1

Therizinosaurus shared its home with the giant predator Tarbosaurus, but its great height and long claws may have helped it defend itself.1

שאלת

השאלות הנפוצות ביותר על Therizinosaurus

?How big was Therizinosaurus?

It was about 9 to 10 metres (30 to 33 feet) long and 4 to 5 metres (13 to 16 feet) tall. It weighed possibly over 5 tonnes (5.5 short tons), similar to an elephant.1

?What did Therizinosaurus eat?

It was a plant-eater. It used its long neck and beak to reach and pull down leaves and branches.1 3

?Did Therizinosaurus have feathers?

Yes, like other therizinosaurids, it likely had sparse feathering covering its body.1

?How long were Therizinosaurus's claws?

Its hand claws were the longest of any land animal, reaching over 50 centimetres (20 inches) long.1 3

?Could Therizinosaurus defend itself?

Its long claws may have been used for intimidation or self-defense against predators like Tarbosaurus, though they were fragile.1

?Was Therizinosaurus a dinosaur?

Yes, it is a type of theropod dinosaur, specifically a therizinosaurid.1 3

?When did Therizinosaurus live?

It lived about 72 to 66 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous Period.3

?Where was Therizinosaurus found?

Its fossils were found in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia, in the Nemegt Formation.1

?How fast could Therizinosaurus run?

Probably only about 13 km/h (8 mph) at its fastest, about as fast as a kid running fast. This is an estimate. It was a big, slow-moving dinosaur.1

?Was Therizinosaurus bigger than T. rex?

Therizinosaurus was about 9 to 10 metres long, while T. rex was about 12 metres long, so T. rex was longer. However, Therizinosaurus was taller.1
