Ankylosaurus
Ankylosaurus was a walking tank covered in bony plates and armed with a heavy club on its tail. It lived at the very end of the Age of Dinosaurs, about 68 to 66 million years ago, in what is now North America. Despite its scary look, it was a gentle plant-eater that used its tail club to defend itself from big predators like Tyrannosaurus rex.1

სახალისო ფაქტები
Ankylosaurus is one of the largest known ankylosaurids, with an estimated length of up to 8 metres (26 feet).12
Its body was covered in bony plates called osteoderms, and it had a large half-ring of armour across its neck and shoulders.2
The tail club was made of fused bones and could be swung powerfully from side to side to deliver devastating blows to attackers.1
Ankylosaurus had a long, low skull with prominent horns that stuck out sideways or upwards.2
Scientists have never found a complete Ankylosaurus skeleton, so some details about its armour arrangement remain unknown.1
It moved slowly on four legs, but could probably speed up when it needed to escape danger.1
Some scientists think Ankylosaurus might have used its front limbs for digging, perhaps to find roots or other food.1
ყველაზე ხშირი კითხვები: Ankylosaurus
?How big was Ankylosaurus?
Ankylosaurus was up to 8 metres (26 feet) long and weighed up to 8 tonnes (8.8 short tons), which is heavier than a male African elephant.134
?What did Ankylosaurus eat?
Ankylosaurus was a plant-eater (herbivore). It ate low-growing plants like ferns, shrubs, and fruit, using its beak to snip them and small leaf-shaped teeth to chew.13
?Did Ankylosaurus have a tail club?
Yes, Ankylosaurus had a heavy club at the end of its tail made of fused bones. It could swing it powerfully from side to side to defend itself against predators like Tyrannosaurus rex.134
?How fast could Ankylosaurus run?
Probably only about 10 km/h (6 mph) at its fastest, a bit slower than a kid running fast. This is an estimate. Ankylosaurus was a slow, heavy, armoured dinosaur on four legs, but it could hurry a little when it needed to.13
?Was Ankylosaurus bigger than T. rex?
No, Ankylosaurus was not bigger than T. rex. Ankylosaurus was up to 8 metres long, while Tyrannosaurus rex was much larger, reaching over 12 metres in length.13
?Did Ankylosaurus have feathers?
No, Ankylosaurus did not have feathers. Its body was covered in bony plates called osteoderms, and it had a thick, scaly skin like other armoured dinosaurs.34
?When did Ankylosaurus live?
Ankylosaurus lived at the very end of the Age of Dinosaurs, about 68 to 66 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous Period.134
?Where was Ankylosaurus found?
Fossils of Ankylosaurus have been found in western North America, including Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.134
?Could Ankylosaurus swim?
Scientists are not sure if Ankylosaurus could swim. Its heavy body and short legs suggest it was not a good swimmer, but it may have been able to cross rivers if needed.3
?What does the name Ankylosaurus mean?
The name Ankylosaurus means 'fused lizard' or 'bent lizard'. It refers to the fused bones in its skull and body that made it very strong.3
მითების მსხვრეველი
მითი: Ankylosaurus used its tail club to attack and kill prey.
სიმართლე: Ankylosaurus was a herbivore and only used its tail club for defence against predators, not for hunting.1
