The only known fossil of Irisosaurus is a partial skeleton called the holotype, found in 2018.1

Its name comes from the Latin word for rainbow, because Yunnan is known for its colorful clouds.1 2

Irisosaurus lived during the Early Jurassic Period, about 192 to 184 million years ago.5

Scientists think Irisosaurus was a close relative of Mussaurus, another early sauropodomorph.1
