Stegosaurus had a very small brain compared to its body, but it still survived for millions of years.1

The plates on its back were probably used for display or to control body temperature, not for fighting.1

Its tail had spikes, and scientists think Stegosaurus used them to defend itself from predators like Allosaurus.1

Stegosaurus had small, peg-shaped teeth that were not good for chewing, so it probably swallowed plants whole.1

It could probably only eat plants that were about 1 meter (3 feet) above the ground, unless it stood on two legs.1

Stegosaurus is the state fossil of Colorado, USA, since 1982.1

tias dumondas

Las dumondas las pli frequentas davart Stegosaurus

?How big was Stegosaurus?

Stegosaurus usually grew to about 6.5 metres (21 feet) long, but some reached 9 metres (30 feet). The largest known specimens weighed over 6.9 metric tons (7.6 short tons).2 1

?What did Stegosaurus eat?

Stegosaurus was a herbivore, eating plants like mosses, ferns, horsetails, cycads, and conifers. It probably ate low-lying bushes and shrubs, foraging at most 1 metre (3 feet) above the ground.1 3

?When did Stegosaurus live?

Stegosaurus lived in the Late Jurassic period, about 155 to 145 million years ago.1 3

?Where was Stegosaurus found?

Fossils of Stegosaurus have been found in the western United States and in Portugal.1 3

?Why did Stegosaurus have plates on its back?

Scientists are not exactly sure. The plates may have been used for display, to recognize each other, or to regulate body temperature. They were probably not used for fighting.3 1

?Did Stegosaurus have a small brain?

Yes, Stegosaurus had a very small brain compared to its body. Its brain was around the size of a plum!3 1

?Could Stegosaurus defend itself?

Yes, Stegosaurus had a spiked tail that it probably used to defend itself from predators like Allosaurus.3 1

?Was Stegosaurus bigger than a T. rex?

No, Stegosaurus was about 9 metres (30 feet) long, while T. rex was about 12 metres (40 feet) long. Stegosaurus was smaller.1

?How many species of Stegosaurus are there?

There are three universally recognized species: Stegosaurus stenops, Stegosaurus ungulatus, and Stegosaurus sulcatus.1 2

?Is Stegosaurus a dinosaur?

Yes, Stegosaurus is a dinosaur. It is a herbivorous, four-legged armored dinosaur from the Late Jurassic.1 3

Chatschader da mitus

Mitus: Some people think Stegosaurus had a second brain in its hips to help control its body.

Vardad: Scientists now think that space in the hips was just for storing energy, not for a second brain.1
