Fakte argëtuese

Deinonychus had a huge, curved claw on the second toe of each foot. That claw was about 13 centimetres (5 inches) long and was probably used like a slashing weapon.2

Its tail was stiffened by long bony rods, which helped it balance perfectly when it ran or attacked.2 1

Deinonychus had very flexible wrists, so it could grab and hold prey with its long, clawed hands.1

The name 'Deinonychus' means 'terrible claw', because of that huge foot claw.1

Deinonychus lived during the Early Cretaceous Period, about 145 to 100 million years ago.2

Deinonychus was the model for the 'raptor' dinosaurs in the movie Jurassic Park.2

?What did Deinonychus eat?

It was a meat-eater that ate plant-eating dinosaurs and other animals like mammals.3

?When did Deinonychus live?

It lived during the Early Cretaceous Period, about 115 to 108 million years ago.3

?Where was Deinonychus found?

Fossils have been found in the United States, in Montana, Utah, Wyoming, and Oklahoma.3

?Was Deinonychus a raptor?

It is a dromaeosaur, which is the group people often call raptors. It was a close relative of Velociraptor.3

?How fast could Deinonychus run?

Probably up to about 40 km/h (25 mph), about as fast as a fast human runner. This is an estimate from a dinosaur book. It had a light body and long legs.4

?Did Deinonychus hunt in packs?

It may have hunted in groups, because several Deinonychus fossils have been found near the same prey, but scientists are not sure.4
