Aniksosaurus means 'spring lizard' because it was discovered on September 21, 1995, the first day of spring in the Southern Hemisphere.1

Aniksosaurus was named by Rubén Dario Martínez and Fernando Emilio Novas in 2006. The first fossils were found in 1995 in the Bajo Barreal Formation of Patagonia, Argentina.1
