Datanglong was named in 2014 by paleontologist Mo Jinyou and his team. The only fossil was found near Nazao village in the Datang Basin of Guangxi, China.41

Scientists are not sure exactly how big Datanglong grew, because only a partial skeleton has been found. The length estimate of 8 to 9 metres is based on comparisons with other carcharodontosaurs.2
