The first Nanotyrannus skull was found in 1942 by David Hosbrook Dunkle in the Hell Creek Formation of Montana. In 1988, Robert Bakker, Michael Williams, and Philip Currie named it Nanotyrannus, meaning 'dwarf tyrant'.12
