Gulosaurus
Gulosaurus was an early ichthyosaur, a marine reptile that lived in the ocean during the Early Triassic. It looked a bit like a dolphin and swam by paddling with its flippers. It was about 1.5 meters long, as long as a bicycle.1

Gulosaurus had five fingers on each flipper, like a human hand, instead of many extra finger bones that later ichthyosaurs had.1
Its name honors the Wolverine Nordic and Mountain Society and Dr. Charles Helm, who helped find fossils near Wapiti Lake.1
Scientists first thought Gulosaurus was either Grippia or Parvinatator, but a skull found in 2013 showed it was a new species.1
Gulosaurus lived about 250 to 248 million years ago, soon after the biggest mass extinction on Earth.2
Its skull had a notch on the first metacarpal bone in the flipper, which was different from its close relative Grippia.1

- Gulosaurus was named by Robin Cuthbertson, Anthony Russell, and Jason Anderson in 2013. The first fossil was incomplete, but a second half with the skull was found later and showed it was a new species.1

- Scientists are not sure what the front teeth of Grippia looked like, so they cannot be certain how Gulosaurus's teeth compared.1
