1

Khetranisaurus was a titanosaur, a type of sauropod dinosaur with a very long neck and a small head.1

2

Its fossils were found in rocks that are about 72 to 66 million years old, from the very end of the Cretaceous Period.5

3

The name Khetranisaurus honors the Khetran tribe, a local tribe living in the Koh Sulaiman area of Pakistan.1

4

Khetranisaurus had a unique feature in its tail bones (caudals): the top of the bone was narrower than the bottom, which is different from many other titanosaurs.1

5

Only one species of Khetranisaurus is known, called Khetranisaurus barkhani.51

6

The first fossils of Khetranisaurus were reported in 2004 by scientist M. S. Malkani, but the dinosaur was formally described and named in 2021.51

It was a herbivore, meaning it ate plants. Its long neck helped it reach high vegetation.53

?When did Khetranisaurus live?

It lived during the Late Cretaceous Period, about 72 to 66 million years ago.54

?Where was Khetranisaurus found?

Its fossils were discovered in Balochistan, Pakistan, in the Vitakri Formation.54

?Is Khetranisaurus a dinosaur?

Yes, it is a dinosaur. It was a long-necked, plant-eating sauropod from the titanosaur group.43

?Why is it called Khetranisaurus?

Its name means 'Khetran lizard' and honors the Khetran tribe from the Barkhan district of Pakistan.43

?How fast could Khetranisaurus run?

Nobody knows for sure, but as a large, heavy sauropod, it probably moved slowly and could not run fast.5

?Was Khetranisaurus bigger than T. rex?

Yes, it was much longer. Khetranisaurus was about 15 to 20 metres long, while T. rex was about 12 metres long.3
