Lonchognathosaurus was a flying reptile with a long, pointed snout and needle-like teeth. It soared over lakes and rivers in what is now China during the Early Cretaceous Period, about 137 to 100 million years ago. It was not a dinosaur, but a pterosaur, a close cousin of dinosaurs.1 2

Its skull was about 400 mm (15.75 inches) long, and the tip of its upper jaw was needle-like.1

It had only eight teeth in each upper jaw, and they were spaced far apart, getting smaller towards the back.1 3

In 2022, a wing bone from Siberia was identified as possibly belonging to Lonchognathosaurus, suggesting it lived over a wider area than first thought.1
