Qingxiusaurus was a giant, long-necked plant-eater that lived in what is now China. It walked on all four legs and was as heavy as several elephants. Only a few bones have been found, so scientists are still learning about this dinosaur.1 2

趣味知識

Qingxiusaurus is known from only a few bones: two upper arm bones, two chest plates, and one spine bone from the tail.1

Its name comes from 'Qingxiu', which is short for a Chinese phrase describing the beautiful mountains and water of Guangxi.1

Scientists think Qingxiusaurus lived during the Late Cretaceous period, between about 72 and 66 million years ago.1

The chest plates of Qingxiusaurus were short compared to its arm bones, which helped scientists tell it apart from other titanosaurs.3

Qingxiusaurus belonged to a group of sauropods called titanosaurs, which were some of the largest land animals ever.1

The first fossils of Qingxiusaurus were collected in 1991, but the dinosaur was not named until 2008.1
