趣味知識

Thanatotheristes is the oldest tyrannosaurid dinosaur ever found in Canada.2

Its name comes from the Greek god Thanatos, meaning death, and theristes, meaning harvester.1

The only known fossil is a partial skull from a large subadult, about 80 centimeters long.2

It had a very rough, bumpy surface on its upper jaw bone, which may have been for display.2

Thanatotheristes is a close relative of Daspletosaurus, and together they form a group called Daspletosaurini.1

It lived alongside other dinosaurs like the horned Xenoceratops and the dome-headed Colepiocephale.1

關於 Thanatotheristes 最常被問的問題

?How big was Thanatotheristes?

Thanatotheristes was about 8 metres (26 feet) long, based on skull material and comparisons with related genera. Some sources say it could grow up to 10 metres (about the length of a large bus).1 4

?What did Thanatotheristes eat?

Thanatotheristes was a carnivore, so it ate meat. It likely preyed on large plant-eating dinosaurs like the horned Xenoceratops and the dome-headed Colepiocephale.5 4

?When did Thanatotheristes live?

Thanatotheristes lived about 80.1 to 79.5 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period. It is the oldest tyrannosaur known from Canada.1 4

?Where was Thanatotheristes found?

Thanatotheristes fossils were found in the Foremost Formation of Alberta, Canada. The bones were discovered along the Bow River near the town of Hays.1 5

?Why is it called Thanatotheristes?

Thanatotheristes means 'reaper of death' or 'death harvester' in Greek. It was named that because it was the top predator in its ecosystem.1 4

?Was Thanatotheristes bigger than T. rex?

No, Thanatotheristes was smaller than Tyrannosaurus rex. Thanatotheristes was about 8 to 10 metres long, while T. rex reached lengths of 12 to 13 metres.1 4
