Troodon

Troodon was a small, smart dinosaur that lived in North America and Asia. It had big eyes and a big brain, and scientists think it may have eaten both plants and meat. Troodon was not a raptor like Velociraptor, but it was a close cousin.2

Troodon is often called one of the smartest dinosaurs because its brain was large for its body size.1

Troodon was not a dromaeosaur (the group that includes Velociraptor), but it was closely related to them.2

Some Troodon relatives had a hooked claw on their foot, like the raptors, but scientists think they may have evolved it separately.2

The first Troodon fossil was a single tooth found in Montana in 1855 by Ferdinand Hayden.1

For many years scientists thought Troodon might be a lizard or a pachycephalosaur, until more fossils showed it was a small meat-eating dinosaur.1

Troodon lived about 79 to 75 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period.2

Fossils of Troodon have been found in many places, including Alaska, which was much warmer when Troodon was alive.6

?How big was Troodon?

Troodon was a small dinosaur, about 2 to 3 metres (6.5 to 10 feet) long and roughly the size of a fifth grader. Its brain was about the size of a golf ball.3

?What did Troodon eat?

Troodon was probably omnivorous, meaning it ate both meat and plants. Its teeth suggest it could eat small mammals, lizards, and maybe even plants.2 3

?Was Troodon a raptor?

No, Troodon was not a raptor (dromaeosaur), but it was a close relative. Some of its relatives had a hooked claw on their foot, like raptors, but scientists think they evolved it separately.2

?How smart was Troodon?

Troodon had a large brain for its body size, and it is often called one of the smartest dinosaurs. Its brain was about the size of a golf ball, and it may have been as intelligent as modern birds.3 4

?When did Troodon live?

Troodon lived during the Late Cretaceous period, about 79 to 75 million years ago.2

?Is Troodon still a valid dinosaur name?

Scientists are still debating. The only fossils currently called Troodon are some teeth, and many experts think these may belong to another dinosaur. Some fossils once called Troodon are now called Stenonychosaurus.2 5

?Could Troodon see well at night?

Yes, Troodon had large, forward-facing eyes that gave it good vision, possibly for hunting at night.4

?Did Troodon take care of its eggs?

Yes, scientists think Troodon laid pairs of eggs and sat on them to keep them warm, like birds do.3 4

Troodon
Leidy 18566
Theropoda > Troodontidae6
(Campanian / Maastrichtian)6
Dinosaur Park, Oldman, Judith River6
In 1855, Ferdinand Hayden found a single tooth in the Judith River badlands of Montana. Joseph Leidy named it Troodon formosus in 1856, which means 'beautiful wounding tooth'.1
Some scientists argue that the name Troodon formosus should be thrown out because the first tooth fossil is too incomplete to be sure it belongs to a unique species.1
