Prettige feite

Huanansaurus was discovered during the construction of a railway station in Ganzhou, China.2

It lived about 72 to 66 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period.3

Huanansaurus is an oviraptorid, a group of dinosaurs that are closely related to birds and had feathers.1

Its skull had a circular hole called a supratemporal fenestra that was much smaller than the hole below it.1

Huanansaurus is most closely related to Citipati, a dinosaur found in Mongolia, about 3,000 kilometers away.1

More than 200 oviraptorosaur nests with eggs have been found in the same area where Huanansaurus lived.1

Mees gevraagde vrae oor Huanansaurus

?How big was Huanansaurus?

Scientists do not know its exact size because only a partial skeleton has been found. It was an oviraptorid, and related oviraptorids ranged from turkey-sized to 8 metres long.1 2

?Did Huanansaurus have feathers?

Yes. Huanansaurus was an oviraptorid, a group of feathered dinosaurs closely related to birds.1 2

?What did Huanansaurus eat?

Huanansaurus had a short, toothless beak, so it likely ate plants or small animals. Its exact diet is not known.2

?When did Huanansaurus live?

Huanansaurus lived about 72 to 66 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period.2

Vir dino-kenners

Wetenskaplike naam: Huanansaurus
Benoem deur: Lü et al. 20155
Groep: Snaakse dino's met vere
Familie / klade: Oviraptoridae5
Klassifikasie: Theropoda > Oviraptorosauria5
Ouderdom van die rotse: 72 tot 66 miljoen jaar (Maastrichtian)5
Rotsformasies: Hekou5
Lande: China5

Ontdekking: Huanansaurus was named and described in 2015 by Lü Junchang and his team. The skeleton was found during the building of the Ganzhou railway station in Jiangxi, China.2 1
Steeds omstrede: Scientists are still debating exactly how Huanansaurus is related to other oviraptorids. Some studies place it in the subfamily Citipatinae, while others put it in Oviraptorinae.3
