Fun facts

1

Fukuititan was named in 2010 by scientists Yoichi Azuma and Masateru Shibata, who worked at the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum.1

2

The only known fossil of Fukuititan was found in an area of 150 square metres, and all the bones are thought to belong to one animal.1

3

Fukuititan had a stalk-like epipophysis on its neck vertebrae, a feature that helps tell it apart from other titanosauriforms.1

4

Its teeth had an elongated crown with a weak or absent labial groove, and no lingual concavity.3

5

Fukuititan is the first relatively complete titanosauriform skeleton found in Japan.3

6

Some scientists think the holotype specimen was an immature individual, so its adult size is uncertain.1

Most asked questions about Fukuititan

?How big was Fukuititan?

It was a medium sized sauropod, estimated to be about 16.1 metres (53 feet) long, 5.75 metres (18.9 feet) tall at the shoulder, and weighed around 5.75 tonnes (6.34 short tons). However, some scientists think the only known fossil is from a young animal, so its full adult size is uncertain.1

?What did Fukuititan eat?

Fukuititan was a herbivore, meaning it ate plants.4

?When did Fukuititan live?

Fukuititan lived during the Early Cretaceous period, about 127 to 115 million years ago.1

?Where was Fukuititan found?

Its fossils were discovered in the Kitadani Formation in Fukui Prefecture, Japan, near the Sugiyama River.1

Still debated
Scientists are unsure exactly how Fukuititan is related to other titanosauriforms because its skeleton is incomplete.1
