Burianosaurus was a small, plant-eating dinosaur that lived in what is now the Czech Republic during the Late Cretaceous. It is the first dinosaur ever named from that country, and scientists know it from a single thigh bone.1 4

სახალისო ფაქტები

Burianosaurus is the first validly named dinosaur from the Czech Republic.1

Its name honors the famous Czech paleoartist Zdeněk Burian, who painted many prehistoric animals.1

The only known fossil is a well-preserved left thigh bone (femur) found in 2003.1 4

Scientists studied the bone's internal structure and found it came from a young adult.2

Burianosaurus lived about 100 to 94 million years ago during the Cenomanian stage of the Late Cretaceous.4

It was a basal ornithopod, meaning it was an early relative of bigger plant-eaters like Iguanodon.2

Burianosaurus

?What did Burianosaurus eat?

It was a plant-eating dinosaur, a ground-dwelling herbivore. It likely ate plants like ferns and leaves.4 1

?How big was Burianosaurus?

Scientists don't know its exact size because only a thigh bone has been found. It was a small dinosaur, but no exact measurements are given in the sources.1

?When did Burianosaurus live?

It lived during the Cenomanian stage of the Late Cretaceous, about 100 to 94 million years ago.1

?Why is Burianosaurus important?

It is the first validly named dinosaur from the Czech Republic, and it is the only known non-avian dinosaur from Central Europe during that time.1 2
