Stokesosaurus
Stokesosaurus was a small, early cousin of the mighty T. rex. It lived during the Late Jurassic period, about 150 million years ago, in what is now the United States. This speedy predator hunted small animals in a world full of giant sauropods and Allosaurus.1

Mfundo zosangalatsa
Stokesosaurus is one of the earliest known tyrannosauroids, the group that later included T. rex.1
The only certain fossil of Stokesosaurus is a single hip bone (ilium) from a juvenile, about 22 centimeters (8.7 inches) long.1
Stokesosaurus lived alongside giants like Allosaurus, which made up 70 to 75 percent of the big predators in its environment.1
A tiny ilium from South Dakota may belong to Stokesosaurus, showing it lived far from Utah.2
Some scientists think Stokesosaurus might be the same animal as Tanycolagreus, but the missing hip bone of Tanycolagreus makes this hard to check.1
Stokesosaurus was named after geologist William Lee Stokes, who helped dig up thousands of Allosaurus bones at the Cleveland-Lloyd Quarry.1

Mafunso ofunsidwa kwambiri okhudza Stokesosaurus
?How big was Stokesosaurus?
Stokesosaurus was a small dinosaur, about 3 to 4 meters long. One scientist estimated it at 2.5 meters and 60 kilograms.1
?What did Stokesosaurus eat?
It was a small, bipedal predator that likely ate small animals like lizards, early mammals, and maybe baby dinosaurs.1
?Where did Stokesosaurus live?
It lived in what is now Utah, USA, during the Late Jurassic period. A tiny hip bone from South Dakota might also belong to it, showing it lived farther east.12
?Is Stokesosaurus a dinosaur?
Yes, it is a theropod dinosaur, part of the group that includes T. rex and birds.13
?When did Stokesosaurus live?
It lived about 150 million years ago, during the Late Jurassic period (Tithonian stage).1
?Why is it called Stokesosaurus?
It is named after geologist William Lee Stokes, who helped dig up many Allosaurus bones at the Cleveland-Lloyd Quarry in Utah.1

Nthano: Some people think Stokesosaurus was a species of the British dinosaur Iliosuchus.
Zoona: Scientists now agree Stokesosaurus is a separate genus, not a type of Iliosuchus.1
