Evgenavis is known only from a single fossil bone, a tarsometatarsus (a foot bone).1 2

Scientists are not sure exactly what group Evgenavis belongs to. It might be a confuciusornithiform (like the early beaked bird Confuciusornis) or an enantiornithine (a different group of early birds).1 2

The fossil of Evgenavis was found in 2007 by a joint expedition from the Zoological Institute, Tomsk University, and Saint Petersburg University.2

Evgenavis lived during the Early Cretaceous, about 125 to 113 million years ago.3

The name Evgenavis honors Evgeny Kurochkin, a famous Russian paleontologist who studied ancient birds.1
