Xuwulong was a duck-billed dinosaur that lived in what is now China during the Early Cretaceous. It walked on two legs and ate plants with its beak and many cheek teeth.1 2

Xuwulong is one of the most primitive members of the hadrosauriform group, which includes the duck-billed dinosaurs.3

The only known skeleton of Xuwulong is almost complete, including a full skull, backbone, and left hip bone.1 3

Its lower jaw had a V-shaped front end and a jaw joint that sat at mid-height of the jawbone, which is different from other hadrosauriforms.3

Xuwulong lived about 121 to 113 million years ago, during the Aptian age of the Early Cretaceous.2

The fossil was found in the Xiagou Formation, which was once a river or lake environment.1

Xuwulong was named in 2011 by Chinese paleontologists You Hailu, Li Daqing, and Liu Weichang.1
