Pellegrinisaurus was a huge, long-necked dinosaur that lived in Argentina near the end of the Age of Dinosaurs. It was a titanosaur, a group of giant sauropods that were some of the biggest land animals ever. This gentle giant munched on plants and probably traveled in herds.12

1

Pellegrinisaurus had special tail bones that were flattened from top to bottom, which may have helped lock the tail and limit its movement.1

2

Its thigh bone had a very flat fourth trochanter (a bump where leg muscles attach), unlike many other sauropods.1

3

Scientists think Pellegrinisaurus was closely related to Alamosaurus, a titanosaur from North America.1

4

The only known fossil was found in 1975 but wasn't named until 1996 by paleontologist Leonardo Salgado.1

5

Pellegrinisaurus lived alongside other titanosaurs like Aeolosaurus and Rocasaurus in the same ancient environment.1

6

Its name honors Pellegrini Lake, where the fossil was discovered.1

Pellegrinisaurus was a very large titanosaur, estimated to be 20 to 25 metres long and weigh about 50 metric tons.1

?What did Pellegrinisaurus eat?

Pellegrinisaurus was a plant-eater. It munched on plants, like other sauropods.1

?When did Pellegrinisaurus live?

Pellegrinisaurus lived during the Late Cretaceous period, from about 83 to 72 million years ago (Campanian to early Maastrichtian).1

?Where was Pellegrinisaurus found?

Its fossils were found near Pellegrini Lake in Argentina, in the Allen Formation.1

The first fossils of Pellegrinisaurus were found in 1975 by Roberto Abel and his assistant Jaime Emilio Powell near Pellegrini Lake, Argentina. Paleontologist Leonardo Salgado named it in 1996, giving the species name powelli in honor of Powell.1

Scientists are not sure exactly which group of titanosaurs Pellegrinisaurus belongs to. Some think it is a close relative of Saltasauridae, while others place it inside that family.1
