Aepyornithomimus is known from only a single left foot and ankle bones, but it is the best preserved ornithomimid specimen from the Djadokhta Formation.1 2

Its name means 'ostrich mimic from Tögrögiin Shiree' because its foot looks like that of a giant ostrich.1 2

This dinosaur lived about 83 to 72 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period.3

Aepyornithomimus had a special foot condition called arctometatarsalian, where the middle foot bones are pinched together for speed.1 2

It was one of the few ornithomimosaurs that lived in a dry, sandy desert environment.1 2

The fossil was found in the Central Sayr area of Tögrögiin Shiree, about 50 kilometres northwest of the famous fossil site Bayn Dzak.1 2
