Barrosasaurus is known from only three back vertebrae, but these bones are very well preserved.1 2

It lived during the Late Cretaceous period, about 93 to 72 million years ago.3

The dinosaur was named after the Sierra Barrosa hill in Argentina where its fossils were found.1

Its species name, casamiquelai, honors the Argentine paleontologist Rodolfo Magín Casamiquela.1

Barrosasaurus belonged to a group of giant sauropods called titanosaurs, which were common in the southern continents.1

Scientists think Barrosasaurus was about 18 meters (60 feet) long and weighed around 13.5 tonnes (14.9 short tons).1
