Fumicollis had teeth in its beak, unlike most modern birds.1

It could not fly, but it was a very good swimmer and diver.1 2

Its name comes from the Smoky Hill Chalk where its fossil was found.1

Fumicollis lived about 86 to 82 million years ago in the Western Interior Seaway.3 2

The only known fossil of Fumicollis was discovered in 1937 by Harold Shepherd and George Sternberg.1 2

Fumicollis was a more advanced diver than the similar bird Baptornis, but not as advanced as the larger Hesperornis.1
