Unaysaurus is one of the earliest known dinosaurs from Brazil, dating back to about 225 million years ago.1
Its name means 'black water lizard' in the Tupi language, referring to the dark-colored rocks where it was found.1
Unaysaurus was a close relative of Plateosaurus, a well-known dinosaur from Europe, suggesting that early dinosaurs could travel across the supercontinent Pangaea.2
The only known skeleton of Unaysaurus is semi-articulated, meaning many bones were still connected when found, including a nearly complete skull.1
Unaysaurus had a blunt ridge on its upper arm bone that may have helped attach strong muscles for walking or feeding.1
