Igdamanosaurus
Igdamanosaurus was a marine lizard that lived in the Late Cretaceous seas. It had blunt, rounded teeth like little knobs, perfect for crushing hard-shelled prey such as clams and turtles. It was a small mosasaur, about the size of a close relative called Carinodens.1

Igdamanosaurus had teeth with fine vertical stripes, about 65 to 70 ridges on each tooth.1
Its largest tooth was about 27 mm high and 22 mm wide, which is roughly the size of a small marble.1
The type specimen consists of only three jaw fragments and several broken teeth, all probably from one animal.1
Igdamanosaurus lived between 70.6 and 66 million years ago, during the Maastrichtian stage of the Late Cretaceous.1
It belonged to a group of mosasaurs called Globidensini, known for their rounded, knob-like teeth.1
The name Igdamanosaurus comes from the village of Igdaman (also called In Dama) in Niger, near where the fossils were found.1

- Igdamanosaurus was first named as Globidens aegyptiacus by Otto Zdansky in 1935. In 1991, Theagarten Lingham-Soliar gave it its own genus, Igdamanosaurus, based on fossils from Niger and Egypt.1

- Scientists are not sure whether Igdamanosaurus evolved from a Platecarpus-like ancestor or a Clidastes-like ancestor, because its teeth are unique.1
