1

Isfjordosaurus is known from only a single upper arm bone, called a humerus, which makes it a mysterious animal.2

2

Some scientists are not sure if Isfjordosaurus was really an ichthyosaur, because the bone looks unusual.2

3

It lived during the Early Triassic, a time when ichthyosaurs were just starting to appear in the oceans.1

4

The name Isfjordosaurus comes from the Isfjord, a large fjord on Spitsbergen, where the fossil was found.1

5

The only known species is called Isfjordosaurus minor, and 'minor' means smaller, hinting it was a small reptile.1

Atosɛm: Some people think Isfjordosaurus was a dinosaur because it lived in the sea and had 'saurus' in its name.

Nokorɛ: Isfjordosaurus was an ichthyosaur, a marine reptile, not a dinosaur. Dinosaurs lived on land.1
