Fun facts

1

Arackar is the third dinosaur ever named from Chile.3

2

Its fossils were discovered in 1993 by Carlos Arévalo in a dry ravine called Quebrada La Higuera.31

3

The only known skeleton is from a sub-adult, meaning it was not fully grown when it died.3

4

Arackar belongs to a group of titanosaurs called Lithostrotia, which includes other famous long-necked dinosaurs.23

5

Its closest relatives include Rapetosaurus from Madagascar and Isisaurus from India.3

Most asked questions about Arackar

?How big was Arackar?

The only known skeleton is about 6.3 metres (21 ft) long, which is about as long as a big car. It was a juvenile, so a fully grown adult would have been bigger, but scientists don't know exactly how big.14

?What did Arackar eat?

Arackar was a plant-eater, like all titanosaurs. It ate leaves and plants that grew in its warm, humid home in what is now Chile.4

?When did Arackar live?

Arackar lived during the Late Cretaceous period, about 80 to 66 million years ago.4

?Where was Arackar found?

Its fossils were found in the Atacama Region of northern Chile, about 75 km (47 mi) south of the city of Copiapó.14
