Fun facts
Huangshanlong is known only from a right humerus (upper arm bone), radius, and ulna (forearm bones). No skull or other bones have been found yet.2
Its humerus is 90 cm long, which is about 36% of the total length of the humerus. This helped scientists estimate its size.3
Huangshanlong belongs to the Mamenchisauridae family, a group of sauropods known for their extremely long necks.12
The fossils were discovered in 2002 during highway construction near Huangshan city. They were later rescued and studied by scientists.3
Huangshanlong lived during the Middle Jurassic, about 174 to 161 million years ago, in a warm, wet environment with rivers and forests.1
It is the first Jurassic dinosaur and the second dinosaur species ever named from Anhui Province, China.2

- Discovery
- Huangshanlong was named in 2014 by Chinese paleontologists Huang Jian-Dong, You Hai-Lu, Yang Jing-Tao, and Ren Xin-Xin. The fossils were found in the Hongqin Formation of Shexian, Huangshan, Anhui Province.12
- Still debated
- Because only arm bones have been found, scientists are not sure about the exact shape of its neck, head, or tail. More fossils are needed to know what the whole animal looked like.2
