Lacusovagus

Say it: lak-oo-SOH-vay-gus
Name means: “lake wanderer”1
Ate: FishFlying reptilesEarly CretaceousNot technically a dinosaur

Lacusovagus was a big flying reptile that soared over ancient Brazil. It had no teeth and no crest on its head, which made it different from many other pterosaurs. It was the largest pterosaur found in the Crato Formation.12

Fun fact: pterosaurs flew over the dinosaurs, but they were their cousins, not dinosaurs themselves.

Fun facts

1

Lacusovagus had a long, wide skull and a short snout in front of its big nasal opening.1

2

It was toothless, which is unusual for pterosaurs from the Crato Formation.1

3

Its wingspan was about 4 metres (13 feet), making it the biggest pterosaur known from the Crato Formation.1

4

Lacusovagus weighed around 30 kilograms (66 pounds), similar to a large dog.1

5

Scientists think it belonged to a group called Chaoyangopteridae, but some studies place it with Tupuxuara or Tapejaridae.1

Most asked questions about Lacusovagus

?Was Lacusovagus a dinosaur?

No, Lacusovagus was a pterosaur, a flying reptile that lived alongside dinosaurs but was not a dinosaur itself.1

?How big was Lacusovagus?

Lacusovagus had a wingspan of about 4 metres (13 feet) and weighed around 30 kilograms (66 pounds), about the size of a large dog.1

?Did Lacusovagus have teeth?

No, Lacusovagus had no teeth. Its toothless jaws and lack of a head crest made it unusual among pterosaurs from the Crato Formation.1
