Mexidracon

Say it: MEK-sih-DRAY-kon
Name means: “Mexican dragon”1
Ate: A bit of everythingOstrich dinosLate Cretaceous

Mexidracon was a fast, ostrich-like dinosaur that lived in what is now Mexico. It had very long hands with fingers that were longer than its feet, which is weird for a dinosaur! Scientists think it could run quickly on its strong legs.23

Fun facts

1

Mexidracon's hand bones (metacarpals) were longer than its foot bones, an extreme feature not seen in most dinosaurs.23

2

It belonged to a group called ornithomimids, which are often called 'ostrich dinosaurs' because they looked a bit like ostriches.2

3

Mexidracon lived during the Campanian age, about 83 to 72 million years ago.1

4

Its fossils were found in the Cerro del Pueblo Formation in Mexico, a place that also had other dinosaurs like deinocheirids.23

5

The only known specimen includes bones from the spine, arms, hips, and legs, but not the skull.2

6

Mexidracon had a special foot structure called arctometatarsalian, where one foot bone was pinched between the others, helping it run.23

Most asked questions about Mexidracon

?What did Mexidracon eat?

Scientists think Mexidracon ate plants. Its long hands may have helped it gather vegetation, like other plant eating ornithomimosaurs with long arms.5

?How big was Mexidracon?

Scientists don't know its exact size yet, because only a partial skeleton has been found. It was probably medium-sized, like other ornithomimids.5

?When did Mexidracon live?

Mexidracon lived about 72.5 million years ago, during the Campanian age of the Late Cretaceous period.5

?Where was Mexidracon found?

Mexidracon was found in the Cerro del Pueblo Formation in Coahuila, Mexico. Its fossils were discovered near the town of Porvenir de Jalpa.5
