Fun facts

1

Sinraptor was named in 1994 by Philip Currie and Zhao Xijin after a fossil was found in the Gobi Desert of China in 1987.31

2

Despite its name, Sinraptor is not a close relative of Velociraptor. It belongs to a different group called carnosaurs.1

3

A single Sinraptor tooth found in the same rocks is 10 cm (3.9 in) long. If it belonged to Sinraptor, that animal might have been up to 12 m (39 ft) long.1

4

The holotype skeleton of Sinraptor dongi is nearly complete but missing most of the tail and arms. It is kept at the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Canada.31

5

Sinraptor had a large air-filled hole in its cheek bone (jugal), which helped lighten its skull.3

6

One Sinraptor skeleton shows a broken rib that healed by telescoping, meaning the broken ends slid together. It also has tooth marks from other dinosaurs.1

7

Sinraptor lived about 160 million years ago, during the Oxfordian stage of the Late Jurassic.1

you asked

Most asked questions about Sinraptor

?How big was Sinraptor?

About 7.6 metres (25 feet) long and nearly 3 metres (9.8 feet) tall. Some estimates suggest it could reach up to 8.8 metres (29 feet) in length, and one giant tooth hints it might have grown as large as 12 metres (39 feet).14

?What did Sinraptor eat?

Sinraptor was a meat-eater that likely hunted medium-sized dinosaurs like stegosaurs. It used its sharp, blade-like teeth to bite and kill its prey.1

?Is Sinraptor a dinosaur?

Yes, Sinraptor is a dinosaur. It was a large theropod dinosaur that lived during the Late Jurassic period.14

?When did Sinraptor live?

Sinraptor lived about 160 million years ago, during the Late Jurassic period.14

?Where was Sinraptor found?

Sinraptor fossils were found in the Shishugou Formation in the Gobi Desert of northwestern China.13

?Was Sinraptor bigger than Velociraptor?

Yes, Sinraptor was much bigger than Velociraptor. Sinraptor was about 7.6 metres (25 feet) long, while Velociraptor was only about 2 metres (6.5 feet) long.1

Myth buster

Myth: Sinraptor is a type of raptor like Velociraptor.

Truth: Sinraptor is not a dromaeosaurid (raptor). It is a carnosaur, more closely related to Allosaurus.1
