Titanomachya was a small titanosaur that lived in what is now Patagonia, Argentina, about 67 million years ago. Even though it was a giant compared to you, it was one of the smallest titanosaurs ever found, about the size of a cow!1

Fun facts

1

Titanomachya is one of the smallest titanosaurs ever found, weighing only 5 to 10 tons, while some other titanosaurs weighed over 70 tons.1

2

Its name comes from the Titanomachy, the battle between the Olympian gods and the Titans in Greek mythology.1

3

This dinosaur lived near the end of the Cretaceous Period, about 67 million years ago, just before the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs.1

4

Titanomachya was found in the La Colonia Formation in central Patagonia, where no sauropod fossils had been found before.1

5

Its ankle bone (astragalus) has a shape that is halfway between two groups of titanosaurs: Colossosauria and Saltasauroidea.2

6

The area where Titanomachya lived was a wet, marshy place with coastal lagoons and estuaries, home to predators like Carnotaurus.1

you asked

Most asked questions about Titanomachya

?How long was Titanomachya?

About 6 metres (20 feet) long, which is roughly the length of a minibus.31

?What did Titanomachya eat?

It was a herbivore, meaning it ate plants. As a long-necked sauropod, it likely fed on leaves and other vegetation.13

?What other dinosaurs lived with Titanomachya?

It shared its habitat with the meat-eating dinosaurs Carnotaurus and Koleken, as well as duck-billed hadrosaurs and armored ankylosaurs.3

Still debated
Scientists are not sure why Titanomachya was so small. It might be because it lived on a shrinking land area as the Atlantic Ocean covered parts of Patagonia, or because of changes in climate and ecosystems.1
