Fun facts

1

Xuanhanosaurus had a forearm that was relatively massive and long, which is unusual for a meat-eating dinosaur of its time.1

2

Its humerus, the upper arm bone, was straight and had a medial deltopectoral crest, a feature that helped attach strong muscles.1

3

The ratio of the maximum length of its humerus to its radius was 1.3, which scientists say is extremely conservative for a carnosaur.1

4

Xuanhanosaurus had a metacarpal III that was comparatively massive, and its metacarpal IV was short and light.1

5

The fossils come from the Lower Shaximiao Formation, which is Middle Jurassic in age, about 170 to 168 million years old.2

Most asked questions about Xuanhanosaurus

?How big was Xuanhanosaurus?

About 4.8 metres (16 feet) long and weighed around 265 kilograms (585 pounds).4

?Did Xuanhanosaurus walk on four legs?

Probably not. The scientist who first described it thought it might, but later experts say it walked on its hind legs like other meat-eating dinosaurs.4

?What does Xuanhanosaurus mean?

Xuanhanosaurus means 'Xuanhan lizard,' named after Xuanhan County in Sichuan, China, where it was found.4

?When did Xuanhanosaurus live?

It lived during the Middle Jurassic, about 166 million years ago.4

?What did Xuanhanosaurus eat?

It was a meat-eater (theropod dinosaur) that likely hunted other animals with its sharp teeth and strong arms.4

?Why did Xuanhanosaurus have strong arms?

Its strong arms may have been useful for catching prey, even though it walked on two legs.4
