Phuwiangvenator belongs to a group of theropods called Megaraptora, which had long snouts and big claws.1

The first fossil of Phuwiangvenator was found in 1993 by a team led by Preecha Sainongkham, who worked at the Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum.2

Its name honors Sudham Yaemniyom, the geologist who found the first dinosaur bone in Thailand in 1976.1

The fossils were discovered in the Sao Khua Formation, which is made of red clay and sandstone from an ancient floodplain.1 2

Phuwiangvenator lived about 125 to 120 million years ago, during the Barremian age of the Early Cretaceous.2 3

The holotype skeleton includes parts of the backbone, hand bones, leg bones, and foot bones, but no skull has been found yet.1 2
