Hulsanpes was a small, speedy dinosaur that lived in what is now Mongolia. It had long legs and sharp claws, and scientists think it might have been a good runner that could also swim. This little raptor was about the size of a chicken!16

1

Hulsanpes is known from only a partial braincase and a few foot bones, making it one of the most mysterious raptors.1

2

The name Hulsanpes means 'Khulsan foot' because its fossils were found at a place called Khulsan in the Gobi Desert.1

3

Scientists think Hulsanpes was a young animal when it died, because its bones look rough and not fully grown.1

4

Hulsanpes belonged to a group called Halszkaraptorinae, which includes dinosaurs that may have lived partly in water.1

5

Its foot bones were slender and not fused together, which helped it run fast on the ground.1

6

Hulsanpes lived about 75 to 72 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period.1

Dipotso tse botswang haholo ka Hulsanpes

?How big was Hulsanpes?

Hulsanpes was a very small dinosaur, about the size of a chicken. Its foot bones were only about 3.4 to 3.9 cm long.34

?What did Hulsanpes eat?

Scientists think Hulsanpes was a meat-eater, like other raptors. It probably ate small animals, but we don't know exactly what.3

?Could Hulsanpes swim?

Maybe. Hulsanpes belonged to a group called Halszkaraptorinae, and some of its relatives may have lived partly in water. But Hulsanpes itself might have been more of a runner.35

?When did Hulsanpes live?

Hulsanpes lived about 75 to 72 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period.34

Mosenyi wa ditshomo

Tshomo: Some people think Hulsanpes was a bird because of its small size and light bones.

Nnete: Hulsanpes was a non-avian dinosaur, a type of raptor called a dromaeosaurid, not a bird.1

Hulsanpes was discovered in 1970 during a Polish-Mongolian expedition to the Gobi Desert. It was named and described by Polish paleontologist Halszka Osmólska in 1982.1

Scientists are still debating whether Hulsanpes was mostly a runner or spent a lot of time swimming, because its foot bones show features of both lifestyles.1
