Dracopelta was one of the earliest armoured dinosaurs, living about 150 million years ago.1
Its name means 'dragon shield' because of the bony plates that covered its back.1
The only known fossil was found in 1964 during road construction near Praia da Assenta Sul, Portugal.2

- The fossil was found in early 1964 by Leonel Trindade during road works near Barril, Portugal. Georges Zbyszewski and Octávio da Veiga Ferreira dug it out on December 22, 1964. Peter Galton named it Dracopelta zbyszewskii in 1980.2
