Siamraptor
Siamraptor was a meat-eating dinosaur that lived in what is now Thailand, about 121 to 113 million years ago. It was a fast and smart hunter with sharp claws and strong jaws. Scientists think it was one of the earliest big meat-eaters in its family.14

Siamraptor had a very light skeleton with lots of air spaces in its skull and backbone, which made it lighter and helped it breathe better.2
Its lower jaw had a deep oval hole and four small openings, which are special features not seen in other allosauroids.2
Siamraptor is the first named carcharodontosaurian dinosaur from Southeast Asia, which helps scientists understand how these dinosaurs spread across the world.1
The fossil bones show that Siamraptor had a huge number of air pockets and holes, a feature called skeletal pneumaticity, which is also seen in some other big meat-eaters.2
Siamraptor lived during the Aptian age, about 121 to 113 million years ago, when Thailand was part of a landmass with different animals than today.14
The name Siamraptor honors Suwat Liptapanlop, a supporter of fossil research in Thailand, with the species name 'suwati'.1

?How big was Siamraptor?
Siamraptor was about 7 to 8 metres (23 to 26 feet) long, roughly the size of a large bus. It was one of the earliest big meat-eaters in its family.1
?When did Siamraptor live?
Siamraptor lived during the Early Cretaceous, about 121 to 112 million years ago. That was during the Aptian age.1
?Where was Siamraptor found?
Siamraptor was found in Thailand, in the Khok Kruat Formation. The fossils were discovered near the village of Saphan Hin.12
?What did Siamraptor eat?
Siamraptor was a meat-eater, so it hunted other animals. It had sharp claws and strong jaws to catch and eat its prey.1
?Was Siamraptor a dinosaur?
Yes, Siamraptor was a dinosaur. It was a theropod, a group of meat-eating dinosaurs that walked on two legs.1

Léeb: Some people think Siamraptor was a type of raptor like Velociraptor.
Dëgg: Siamraptor was not a raptor. It belonged to a group called Carcharodontosauria, which were large meat-eaters, not the small feathered raptors.1

- Siamraptor was named in 2019 by a team of scientists including Duangsuda Chokchaloemwong and others, based on fossils found in Thailand between 2007 and 2009. The first fossil was a piece of the lower jaw, and more bones from at least three other individuals were found later.1

- Scientists are still debating exactly how Siamraptor is related to other carcharodontosaurs, because it has some features that are more primitive than later members of the group.2
