Xinjiangovenator is known only from a single partial right lower leg, including the tibia, fibula, and ankle bones.1
Its lower leg (tibia plus ankle bones) was 31.2 centimetres (12.3 inches) long.1
The name Xinjiangovenator means 'Xinjiang hunter' after the region of Xinjiang in China.1
It lived during the Early Cretaceous period, between about 137 and 100 million years ago.3
Xinjiangovenator was a coelurosaur, a group of theropod dinosaurs that includes birds.1
The bones were first thought to belong to another dinosaur called Phaedrolosaurus, but later scientists realized they were a new species.1

It was a meat-eating dinosaur, so it probably hunted small animals. Its sharp claws helped catch prey.3
?When did Xinjiangovenator live?
It lived during the Early Cretaceous period, between about 137 and 100 million years ago.1
?Why is Xinjiangovenator only known from a leg?
Scientists have only found one partial right lower leg bone, so that's all we have to study this dinosaur.1
