Acheroraptor

Say it: ACK-ear-oh-RAP-tor
Name means: “Acheron plunderer, after the River of Pain in Greek mythology”1
Ate: MeatRaptorsLate Cretaceous

Acheroraptor was a feathered, meat-eating dinosaur that lived right at the end of the Age of Dinosaurs. It was a close cousin of Velociraptor and ran on two long legs, using its sharp, ridged teeth to hunt. It lived alongside Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops in what is now North America.1

Fun facts

1

Acheroraptor is the youngest known dromaeosaurid, or 'raptor' dinosaur, living just before the mass extinction 66 million years ago.1

2

Its teeth have unique ridges that run from tip to base, which helped scientists identify it as a new species.1

3

Acheroraptor was about 3 metres (9 feet) long and weighed around 40 kilograms (90 pounds), making it a relatively large raptor.1

4

It was likely covered in feathers, like its close relatives Velociraptor and birds.1

5

Acheroraptor is more closely related to Asian raptors like Velociraptor than to older North American species, suggesting dinosaurs migrated between continents.3

?What did Acheroraptor eat?

It was a meat-eating dinosaur, using its sharp, ridged teeth to hunt.1

?When did Acheroraptor live?

Acheroraptor lived 67 to 66 million years ago, right before the mass extinction that ended the Age of Dinosaurs.1

?Where was Acheroraptor found?

Its fossils were found in the Hell Creek Formation in Montana, USA.4

?Is Acheroraptor related to Velociraptor?

Yes, it was a close cousin of Velociraptor, and its jaw bones compare more closely to Asian species like Velociraptor than to older North American ones.1
