Chaoyangosaurus was about 1 metre (3.3 feet) long and weighed only 6 kilograms (13 pounds), about as heavy as a large cat.1
It lived around 150 to 145 million years ago, during the Late Jurassic period.1
Its fossils were found in 1976 by Cheng Zhengwu in the Chaoyang area of Liaoning, China.1
Chaoyangosaurus had a beak and up to 44 teeth, including conical premaxillary teeth and cheek teeth covered in enamel.1
It is one of the earliest known ceratopsians, the group that later included horned dinosaurs like Triceratops.1
The dinosaur's scientific name went through several spellings before being officially named Chaoyangsaurus youngi in 1999.1
