Fun facts

1

Hollanda is known only from its hind leg bones, so scientists have to guess what the rest of its body looked like.1

2

Its foot had a special toe arrangement called anisodactyl, with the first toe turned sideways, which helped it run and perch.1

3

Hollanda lived about 83 to 72 million years ago, during the Campanian age of the Late Cretaceous.4

4

Even though Hollanda was a fast runner on the ground, it evolved from ancestors that lived in trees.1

5

Hollanda is part of a group called Ornithuromorpha, which includes modern birds and their close relatives.4

Most asked questions about Hollanda

?Was Hollanda a dinosaur?

Yes, Hollanda was a small bird-like dinosaur called an avialan theropod. It is not a modern bird but a close relative that lived in the Cretaceous period.24

?How big was Hollanda?

Hollanda was about the size of a turkey, with long legs. Scientists estimate it was roughly 60 to 80 centimetres (2 to 2.6 feet) tall, based on its leg bones.23

?What did Hollanda eat?

Hollanda was a ground-dwelling carnivore that ate insects and small animals. It likely chased its prey on foot, similar to a modern roadrunner.243

Myth buster

Myth: Some people think Hollanda was a dinosaur like T. rex.

Truth: Hollanda was a bird, not a non-avian dinosaur. It is an avialan, which means it is more closely related to modern birds than to dinosaurs like T. rex.4
