Fun facts
Komensaurus lived about 100 to 94 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period.4
It was a basal aigialosaurid mosasauroid, meaning it was an early member of the group that later gave rise to the huge marine predators called mosasaurs.1
The only known fossil of Komensaurus was found in limestone that formed in a shallow sea.1
Before it was officially named, scientists called it the 'Trieste aigialosaur' because it was found near the city of Trieste.1
Komensaurus lived at the same time and place as another early mosasauroid called Carsosaurus.1
The type species is Komensaurus carrolli, named in 2007 by paleontologists Michael Caldwell and Alessandro Palci.1
