Unescoceratops was a small, plant-eating dinosaur that lived about 75 million years ago in what is now Canada. It had a parrot-like beak and a short frill on its head, but no big horns like its famous cousin Triceratops. This dinosaur was named after a UNESCO World Heritage Site where its fossil was found.12

Fun facts

1

Unescoceratops had the roundest teeth of any leptoceratopsid dinosaur.12

2

Its lower jaw had a hatchet-like shape with a bony projection that looked like a small chin.2

3

The only fossil found so far is a partial left lower jaw bone, collected in 1995.1

4

Unescoceratops lived on the island continent of Laramidia during the Late Cretaceous.1

5

This dinosaur was one of the most advanced members of the leptoceratopsid family.1

6

Its full scientific name, Unescoceratops koppelhusae, honors palynologist Eva Koppelhus, wife of dinosaur hunter Philip Currie.12

The fossil was found in 1995 in Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta, by Philip Currie. It was first thought to be a Leptoceratops, but in 2012 scientists Michael Ryan and David Evans named it a new genus and species.12
Still debated
Scientists are not sure exactly how big Unescoceratops was, because only a jaw bone has been found. They estimate it was between 1 and 2 meters long.12
