Abitusavis belongs to a group called Yanornithidae, which includes some of the oldest birds that ate fish.1
Its name means 'wandering bird' in Latin.1
Abitusavis lived between about 125 and 119 million years ago, during the Early Cretaceous.2
The only known fossil of Abitusavis is a nearly complete skeleton found in the Jehol Biota of China.31
It had a long snout packed with many teeth, which helped it catch slippery prey like fish.1
Abitusavis was a ground-dwelling bird that could also fly.2

- Abitusavis was named by Wang Min and colleagues in 2020 based on a nearly complete skeleton (IVPP V14606) from the Yixian Formation in China.32
