1

Evgenavis is known only from a single fossil bone, a tarsometatarsus (a foot bone).12

2

Scientists are not sure exactly what group Evgenavis belongs to. It might be a confuciusornithiform (like the early beaked bird Confuciusornis) or an enantiornithine (a different group of early birds).12

3

The fossil of Evgenavis was found in 2007 by a joint expedition from the Zoological Institute, Tomsk University, and Saint Petersburg University.2

4

Evgenavis lived during the Early Cretaceous, about 125 to 113 million years ago.3

5

The name Evgenavis honors Evgeny Kurochkin, a famous Russian paleontologist who studied ancient birds.1

Evgenavis was named in 2014 by Jingmai O'Connor, Alexander Averianov, and Nikita Zelenkov. The only fossil, a foot bone, was found at the Shestakovo-3 site in western Siberia.32

Scientists still debate whether Evgenavis was a confuciusornithiform or an enantiornithine bird. More fossils are needed to be sure.12
