Parrassaurus was a fast-swimming marine reptile that lived in the warm seas of Mexico during the Late Jurassic. It looked a bit like a dolphin but was actually an ichthyosaur, not a dinosaur. With its long snout and big eyes, it was a skilled hunter of fish and squid.12

1

Parrassaurus had an extremely long snout in front of its nostrils, which helped it snap up prey.1

2

Its skull had a unique feature: the opening for the nostril was split into two parts by a bone from the upper jaw.1

3

This ichthyosaur belonged to a group called ophthalmosaurids, which had very large eyes.2

4

Parrassaurus is only known from one nearly complete skeleton, found on a ranch in Coahuila.31

5

It lived about 145 million years ago, at the very end of the Jurassic Period.3

6

Parrassaurus was named in 2021, making it a relatively new discovery for scientists.3

Scientists are still debating how Parrassaurus is related to other ichthyosaurs, especially other platypterygiines from North America.1
